Materials & Artisanship
Dedication to exquisite craftsmanship with the finest materials in existence
A truly great hat construction requires not only the disciplined and meticulous application of current and antique hat making techniques, but also a careful choice of outstanding materials. It is only then that a hat becomes a unique object, one that can be cherished for a lifetime. At Bolatti Hat Co. we proud ourselves on joining these two aspects with utmost care, to offer a truly unique hat.
All of our hats are handcrafted following these principles, with the exact same materials and craftsmanship, no matter whether they were custom ordered, or have been pre-made and form part of a Collection. We invite you to discover the materials and processes behind our hats, and why we believe those help us make the finest dress hats you can find.
Pure Beaver Hat Bodies
While many types of fur felts and blends are used in hatmaking, we exclusively work with pure beaver fur felt for all our hats. This material is the finest available — exceptionally durable, lightweight, and resistant to the elements — with a soft, lush hand.
We stock beaver hat bodies specifically made for dress-weight hats, with a raw weight between 90 and 120 grams, offered in a restrained yet varied colour palette.
These felts have minimal to medium stiffness, providing enough body to hold their shape while retaining their softness and plushness, and therefore are particularly suited for hats with a snap brim.
Each felt body undergoes stringent shaping, cutting, and surface treatment, resulting in a hat that is highly resistant yet remarkably smooth to the touch, one that will withstand the rigours of a lifetime of wear.
All our beaver felt hat bodies are ethically sourced from one of the oldest and most reputable felt suppliers in Europe, and are sized to our particular hat size, minimizing waste.
In contrast to the polyester “satin” fabrics commonly found in the market today, each liner is crafted in-house for its specific hat, using 40 momme pure silk duchesse and pure silk thread. This luxurious natural fibre provides exceptional comfort, remaining gentle on the hair while offering excellent thermal balance and moisture absorption.
For a lighter option, we also offer an open-weave Italian linen noted for its outstanding breathability, particularly suited for summer hats.
Silk Duchesse Liners
French Vintage Ribbon
All of our hats are hand trimmed with vintage grosgrain ribbon, specially woven in a cotton-rayon blend for hatmaking. Thanks to its ribbed structure, this ribbon (also known as a hat band) conforms beautifully to the crown and brim, while its woven edge creates an elegant, clean finish.
Bolatti Hat Co. was fortunate to acquire a unique inventory of mint-condition French grosgrain ribbon, produced mainly between the 1950s and 1970s by Vialaton & Martin in the historic hat-making village of Chazelles-sur-Lyon. This exceptionally fine ribbon has no modern equivalent and is used in all our hats.
We currently hold over 10 kilometres in more than 60 colours and various widths, offered in a refined and restrained palette. Combined with the subtle tones of our felt bodies, these ribbons lend each hat an authentic aura of understated elegance.
Throughout our site, all ribbon widths are expressed in lignes. This is a traditional unit of measurement historically used in hatband making, with 1 ligne equivalent to 2.26 millimetres.
Fine Leather Sweatbands
We cut, stamp, treat, and sew all our sweatbands in-house. This not only allows us to select the finest hides available, but also to customise stamp colours, stitching, and leather types. Most importantly, it enables us to cut and shape each sweatband precisely to your hat, ensuring it conforms to the taper and size without puckering or distortion.
Whether you choose a classic roan sheepskin, a more rugged steer hide, or a distinctive exotic leather, our extensive selection offers the perfect combination of comfort and style. All our hides are full-grain, chrome-free, vegetable-tanned leathers, sourced from leading European tanneries and select vintage dead-stock.
We offer both treated and untreated sweatbands, according to customer preference. The untreated version lacks the acrylic protective layer, showing the leather grain and allowing it to absorb moisture naturally while remaining exceptionally supple. Over time, it develops a rich natural patina, making each hat truly unique.
For those who prefer additional protection, we also offer a light acrylic finish that preserves the leather’s softness, adds a subtle sheen, and ensures durability throughout the lifetime of the sweatband.
Every sweatband is finished with a small decorative bow, made either from 100% Japanese silk ribbon or from vintage French cotton-rayon ribbon sourced from our curated collection.
Smart storage
A fine hat deserves a refined storage case — one designed to endure, offering lasting protection throughout the hat’s lifetime, not merely during its journey from our studio to you.
For this reason, every hat is accompanied by an elegant, sturdy case that serves both as storage and as a proper carrying case, ensuring your hat remains perfectly protected at all times. Each box is custom-made from MDF, sized precisely to your hat, and fitted with an internal support carefully designed to match its specific style and brim.
Meticulous Construction
From the first block to the last stitch, each hat is crafted entirely by hand. We do not use blocking machinery, power tools, tacking machines, glue, or any form of construction shortcuts. In short, we do not cut corners.
Using modern and vintage handtools made expressly for hatmaking, each felt is hand-blocked slowly and with precision, then ironed and treated to increase density, smooth the surface, and define the brim with exact accuracy. Our authentic wooden blocks and flanges are dimensioned to each client’s head size, many of them custom-made to our specifications, reflecting our distinctive sensibility for dress hats.
The custom sweatband is attached by hand at its precise position, sewn with a durable stitch and thread designed to outlast the hat itself. The French vintage grosgrain hat band is then fitted in the traditional manner: measured, cut, and closed before installation, then invisibly tacked to the hat to prevent movement.
In contrast to industrial production that relies on pre-styled blocks or moulded shapes, each crown is shaped entirely by hand. This imparts a naturally organic silhouette and an understated, enduring elegance — a quiet expression of the care with which we craft every hat.
