Frequently Asked Questions
Collections
-
Our Collections are assemblies of hats that have been made to standard sizes and stocked (known as ready-to-wear in the business parlance), and therefore are ready to ship.
These follow certain themes, are constructed with the same scrupulous techniques and fine materials than our custom hats, and allow customers who want to own one of our hats to skip the custom ordering waiting time.
They are priced lower than custom orders as they cannot be customized, and therefore are a great point of entry to the world of fine headwear.
-
If your size is not available, it means that we are out of stock for that specific size. Since hats in the collections are made in advance, this means that you cannot order a size that is not currently stocked.
However, we do re-stock our collections frequently, so please check back often to see if your size becomes available.
-
Yes they are! Collections allow us to experiment with materials and colours, since a short production run allows us to secure material from our suppliers. For this reason, you may see some more daring colour combinations. If these colours become popular, we will start offering those for our custom hats.
Ordering Custom
-
Please check the Custom Ordering page for up to date information. Normally it takes anywhere from 6 to 10 weeks to finish a custom hat, depending on the type of hat, materials and finishes involved, and current order backlog. Your specific timeline will be assigned during the ordering process.
-
We do not offer distressing or aging for our hats. We believe that hats shall be worn for them to obtain the patina that comes with handling and age.
-
Unfortunately we are unable to exactly duplicate a vintage hat due to several factors, including aging, materials, techniques and tools.
However, we can offer you the closest hat style and colour we are able to build with the current market available materials and tooling. Please get in contact with us to discuss further.
-
If we did the hat, sure!
For other cases, we do not offer screen accurate replicas, as it requires specific skills and tools, many of those unique to that type of hat.
There are several talented hatters out there that create amazing replicas of hats from classics films such as Raiders of the Lost Ark, Casablanca, et al.
-
At the moment all measuring and consultation is done remotely. However, we will be shortly offering in person appointments. Stay tuned!
-
While we indeed are hat makers, we specialize in soft felt dress hats. Stiffer hats require specific tooling, so at the moment we cannot build a Western or Topper.
-
Unfortunately we do not offer wind cords (also known as wind trolleys) as accessories.
The main reason is that wind cords are one of a multitude of vintage gimmicks (many patented!) that did not made a lot sense back then, and make less sense today. Sometimes, they are usually added for accuracy when building vintage reproductions, but even then, most hat wearers do not use them.
A properly fitted hat should not blow away on a moderately windy day.
-
Absolutely! We proud ourselves in building our sweatbands in house, and can offer a wide range of leathers, colours, and stitching thread colours. This will be discussed during one of our consultation meetings.

The reason for not offering worldwide free shipping is that it allows us to offer a more competitive pricing for different regions.

As per our Terms & Conditions, orders outside the EU are subject to custom duties, tariffs, and VAT / HST applicable in your country. These are your responsibility. Please become familiarized with your local custom duties, and other charges prior to placing your order.
Please also check any additional service charges the mail or courier company may add for clearing customs. These charges are in addition to any duties or fees, and sometimes they may be even higher than the duty charges. Couriers companies such as FedEx and UPS are notorious for their excessive duties clearance fees.
We aim to ship most of our orders via postal service EMS services, that usually are handled by your local post office, therefore custom brokerage fees are significantly lower.
-

For custom orders, unfortunately no returns are accepted. Should you have any issues with your custom order, please contact us and we will make it right.

Hat Care
-
For long term storage, we recommend storing your hat in the box that came in. Please use the internal support, and place the hat as it arrived.
For up-turned brimmed hats use the domed insert with the brim resting on the bottom of the box. For down-turned brims, or brims with a slight downward inclination, place the hat upside down with the brim suspended above the internal box insert.
Remember that beaver felt and silk are susceptible to moth damage, so please take the same precautions as with other fine garments.
For everyday storage, hanging your hat on a peg, a hat hook (that supports the sweatband) or leaving it upside down in a closet or shelf is recommended.
-
It depends. Usually with straw hats this is the case, as holding a hat by its crown will eventually damage or crack the weave. It is also the polite thing to do if someone else hands over their hat to you.
With beaver fur felt hats, this is not the case. However handling the hat by its crown will add some patina, softness, and irregularities to the crown as time goes by. If this is a look you are ok with, by all means please handle your hat by the crown. Should you want to keep your crown pristine, we recommend then to handle it by the brim only.
-
Yes you can! We even encourage you to do so.
Wearing a hat under light rain or snow it’s one of the joys of owning a fine hat, and will make you the smartest dressed person around. Just try to avoid downpours or large snow accumulation.
Should your hat get very wet, leave it to dry at room temperature upside down on a soft surface, with the brim fully up. As beaver fur felt becomes malleable when soaked, try to not modify its shape while wet. Do not dry your hat near a stove or heater, as this may distort the shape of the hat.
-
A frequent brushing with a horsehair brush will help remove dust and loose dirt. Any real horsehair brush will do (you don’t necessarily need a hat brush for this, a small new shoe buffing brush will work as well). Use this brush only for your hat, and keep separate brushes for dark and light coloured hats.
Gently brush the crown and upper brim in a counter-clockwise direction, and under brim in a clockwise direction (this is the direction of the hair nap).
-
It depends on the nature of the stain.
For small greasy or oily stains, a solvent such as lighter fuel (naphtha) or a spot remover may work. Always follow the product label directions, and test first in an inconspicuous area.
Red wine stains in light coloured felts are more difficult to deal with, and it may not be posible to fully remove them. If this occurs, please pat dry as soon as posible, and try using a spot remover before the stain sets.
-
This, unfortunately, is a somewhat common occurrence, specially in modern cloakrooms, where attendants may not be aware of how to properly handle a hat. While our hats are not designed to be crushed or rolled, they tolerate a fair amount of abuse.
Please reshape the hat as best as possible, lightly steam the crown and upper brim, and leave to air (never steam the inside of the hat as the vegetable-tanned leather in the sweatband may be damaged). This should bring the hat back to its shape. Should this not work, or should any crease be permanently marked, please reach out. We offer re-shaping services to our clients.
-
Lightly steam the outside of the hat (crown and brim), and brush with a horsehair brush. Should the liner become soiled, or the sweatband heavily stained, we can replace those. Please consult our Services page.
-
For untreated sweatbands (see Materials & Artisanship) this is the regular patina that all vegetable-tanned leather obtains with use. The sweatband is there to catch your sweat, and being in contact with your skin it will absorb skin’s natural oils. This is normal, and it means the sweatband is fulfilling its purpose.
If your sweatband has been treated with a waterproof finisher, this may mean that some skin oil residue or other substances (e.g. makeup) is building up in the leather. Dampen a clean cloth in water with water and remove the residue, and dry the leather afterwards.
Should you require a sweatband replacement, please contact us.

As hat construction and materials vary widely from artisan to manufacturer, and from vintage to modern, we only service hats that have been made by us. This allows us to provide an elevated servicing experience, making sure that the same materials, techniques and blocks used to build your hat are used to restore it to pristine condition.
For servicing information, please check our Services page.
